Do You Miss Them or Yourself? A Deep Reflection

That heart-crunching feeling of missing someone so dearly….
Sounds familiar???

Sometimes you think you miss a person.

You replay the conversations.

You remember the laughter.

You wonder if you made the wrong decision.

You imagine what life would be like if they were still here.

But if you’re honest…

Is it really them you miss?

Or is it the version of yourself that existed when they were part of your life?

We often confuse memories with people.

A song.

A place.

A season.

A familiar scent.

Suddenly we’re overwhelmed with emotion, convinced we’re longing for someone we’ve lost.

Yet what we’re really grieving is a moment in time.

A chapter that can never be repeated exactly as it was.

Maybe you miss feeling carefree.

Maybe you miss believing life was simpler.

Maybe you miss having someone to call at the end of the day.

Maybe you miss who you thought you were becoming.

The heart rarely misses just one person.

It misses the feelings attached to them.

This is why going back doesn’t always bring peace.

We imagine returning to the relationship, the friendship, or the familiar place will make us feel whole again.

But here’s the truth……people change.

Life changes.

And so do we.

Sometimes we’re chasing a memory that no longer exists.

Not because it wasn’t real…

But because it belonged to a different version of our lives.

Healing isn’t forgetting.

Healing is remembering without needing to return.

It’s being able to smile at a memory without believing you have to live inside it again.

It’s thanking a chapter for what it taught you while allowing yourself to turn the page.

There are people who helped shape you.

People who taught you love.

People who taught you loss.

People who showed you what you deserve.

And people who showed you what you’ll never accept again.

Each of them left something behind.

Not all of them were meant to stay.

Sometimes the greatest act of self-love is allowing a memory to remain a memory.

Without trying to rewrite it.

Without trying to relive it.

Without trying to rescue what naturally came to an end.

Because not every ending is a failure.

Some endings are simply life making space for your next beginning.

So if your heart feels heavy today…

Pause before reaching back.

Ask yourself gently:

“Do I truly miss them…

Or do I miss the person I was when life looked different?”

The answer may surprise you.

And it may also set you free.

Some people are chapters.

Some are lessons.

A few become lifelong companions.

Each has a purpose.

But your story was never meant to end with someone who was only passing through.

The best chapters of your life have not all been written yet.

And neither has the person you’re still becoming.
